Is It Possible To Start A Career In Fashion Design Without Having A Formal Degree In Design?
Sep 06, 2008 by lalalogic | Posted in Fashion & Accessories
I'm interested in fashion design, but may not be qualified to go to design school. Would it be impossible to get started without a degree, even if I had the skills and creativity needed?
Take up knee-pants courses if formal degree is not viable (perhaps of the budget).
You can have a career in fashion. You start designing regularly, provide at minimal. Then start to sell it to the streets and Ebay.
You can open up your own boutique after. Or have a conniver hire you as an apprentice.

My ambition is to become a fashion writer, and ultimately editor. I am an incredible writer, yearbook staff two years, rewrite man. I am an intern for the St. Pete Times and am a senior in HS. I am just wondering, what degree can I get in fashion that would help me have found out the fashion world better and become a better fashion writer? Would that be design?
i would say important in journalism, with a minor in either fashion merchandising or design. both give incredible insight into the fashion world

okay, so i've been in cosmetology group but i'm finding that some of the things i do in school i really just don't enjoy (perming/shampoo sets/mens cuts) I don't fancy to continue on doing something when my whole heart isn't in it.
I went on some college visits this week and couldn't find anything that interested me until today. I saw that i can get a degree in fashion/design. The program seems in the final analysis exciting and its something that i already have a passion for.
Has anyone gone/or is currently going to school for this? IF so.. did/do you like it?
what well-disposed of job are you looking for in the future?
did you go to school for 2 yrs or continue on to a 4 yr school?
if you have graduated and gone on to a job, where are you working?
i differentiate its a lot of questions but i'm just looking for information :)
First, please note that though Fashion is overwhelming, it is ALOT of work... if you are a fan of Project Runway, and think that that is hard.... that is valid the tip of the iceburg, so if you are serious about putting in time and work, it can be exciting and pay off.....You can get an 2yr associate degree...but a 4 year is punter.Once you get out of school and are looking for a hob, you will start out as an asst...you will get cofee, cut swatches, press garments, falter up clothing and run alot of errands ( to sample rooms, stores, returns)....but , it teaches you the establishment and its not forever...Also, while in school , learn Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop ( THIS IS IMPORTANT) and when you are in the exertion you till use this, if you can only learn One, then make it Illustrator, but try to learn both ,if they dont have it in your school of voice ( which is crazy, so they should) get a book and learn it. Make sure your portfolio is good and well balanced and trade on your hand drawing as well as computer drawing..... Good Luck and hope this helps or give you a vicinity to start.!
What Career Can I Look For With A Associates Degree In Fashion Design?

One that Pays Well.
You can look for one as a author or merchandiser with any major company. Make sure you have lots of great be familiar with and internships. Those will always help get your foot in the door. Not many of these jobs pay very well unless you are a big name designer yourself. Keep trucking and vocation your way up and you'll make it there. I too, have a fashion degree, and it's a very competitive world.
Can A Fashion Design And Merchandising Degree Lead To A Career As An Apparel Business Owner/Entrepreneur?
May 26, 2008 by PunkRose | Posted in Fashion & Accessories
Yes, but those two degrees are special.
The Fashion Design Degree is geared toward the actual creative and creation side of fashion. Everything from start to the actual finished garment.
The Fashion Merchandising picks up from there. So its the finished garment to the retail side ( in set aside).
Though some of the courses may overlap...they are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. So if you want to be a apparel store possessor. then the merchandising degree is for you... You will learn about buying apparel ( from fashion designers) markups, closeouts, retailing, etc... and you might need to take a few more business classes to better yourself. So that you can learn about building issues, insureance, permits for stores, etc...that they will not go into sageness with in a Fashion Merchandising degree.
It will be hard work, but the end will be worth it.. Good Luck!
