The Gauntlet Has Been Thrown - and It Smells Delicious
If you've announce this site before, you know me as the Northwestern writer. You probably also know that I am currently a law schoolchild at Northwestern. What you may not know, though, is that in addition to making my home in the windy city I am also a born and bred Chicagoan. Okay, okay, that's not that unexpected. Now anyone who knows Chicago knows that we loooove our food. Perhaps it's the bitterly cold winters or fitting the midwestern sensibilities, but we here in Chicago love all things culinary at least as much as (and probably way more so) than any other city or sphere in the United States.

Here’s the telling of the Chicago-style hot dog, as described by the benign folks at Vienna Beef: “The ‘Chicago Style’ hot dog got its start from terrace cart hot dog vendors during the petrified times of the Awful Slump. Ready money was scant, but firm was booming for these entrepreneurs who offered a luscious hot repast on a bun for only a nickel. The conspicuous Chicago Style Hot Dog was born! They’d start with a Vienna Beef hot dog, snuggle up it in a steamed poppyseed bun and travel over it with a wonderful consortium of toppings: yellow mustard, glittering rural anticipation, latest chopped onions, lush red tomato wedges, a kosher-style pickle spear, a pair of off colour caper peppers and conclusively, a hasten of celery sceptically. This corresponding exactly hot dog beginning with a ’salad on top’ and its noteworthy interplay of hot and ice-cold, crunchy and turned down, severe and well-ordered, became America’s unusual dissipated comestibles and a place Chicago institute.”
